A dawn of a new era in Vandy, too

Yup, Malaysia's not the only on on the break for something new. Vanderbilt University is also in that gang. Recently, on March 1 (not so recently actually), Vanderbilt's 'Board of Trust unanimously and enthusiastically elected Nicholas S. Zeppos to be the eighth Chancellor of Vanderbilt University'. Read more here.

But is it a dawn of a good era or not for Vanderbilt? It's still pretty early to decide, but I surely have my doubts. At least for the Muslims that is.

I was told that Zeppos is very pro Jew. I wouldn't mind that actually, but the fact that during this brief tenure of his, there's already 2 very, very controversial speakers who's set foot on Vandy. The first one was Salman Rushdie with '“The Role of the Writer in the 21st Century”, who came here sometime last semester, during which, Zeppos was the acting chancellor after the resign of Gordon Gee last summer. And as recent as 2 days ago, another controversial speaker came, this time Ayaan Hirsi Ali, with "East Meets West", as I mentioned previously. As if those speakers were not enough, next week, Dr. Amina Wadud would come with "Islam, Women and Change".

So, if this proves to be hard times for us Muslims here in Vanderbilt, let's all pray for the better, be patient and brace ourselves for what is coming. InsyaAllah.

Muslims are in big trouble if free speech is allowed. And if women get equal right?

You guys better whip up a showing of rage and fast!

you have it all wrong my friend.. Women do get rights in Islam as of men also.

You can't deny the difference between a man and a woman. Thus, there are somethings that only men are capable of and somethings that only woman are capable of. Based in this, the rights are given.

For instance, once a woman gives birth to a child, all her sins are washed away. Do men get similar treatment? Of course not!

And no, we won't whip a showing of rage, mind you.

women in Islam have a very special role and do receive very special treatmet, we have the guys (our husbands and boys in the family) to do things for us...we don't have to work to feed the family, even if we do work, we keep the money to ourselves, but the husband must work and feed the family...won't women just love that? i don't know any women who would prefer otherwise..and there are so much more to it than what I mentioned here...please don't talk bad about things you hardly understand, know better about it first to talk about it, and watching it in movies and TV doesn't count as learning and understanding. ^_^

(Al-Imran:8)
